What’s a backstory?

Many people think about leaving behind letters or stories for their family — but rarely do. That’s a profound loss for them and everyone who loves them.

I created Backstory to help document and craft the life-shaping experiences, memories, and history of your loved ones, which then becomes a collection of stories or letters to share with future generations.

Backstory: Everyone has one. It’s the defining moments, triumphs, heartbreaks, turning points, and quiet revelations that shape a person’s life and legacy. Yet too often these meaningful stories remain locked away.

Understanding your family’s backstory is key to knowing who you are — and where you came from. Essential to discovering the forces that have shaped you. The values that define you. These stories can’t be recaptured once the teller is gone. Yet because of time, overwhelm, or simply not knowing how to start, they all too often fade away.

I am a skilled writer and interviewer who has developed a simple and meaningful process to unlock these stories. Through guided, one-on-one conversations, I help seniors craft family love letters or first-person story collections that can be saved and passed down.
